Blooming Creativity: Paper Flower Making at the Art Shed 🌺🌿

I'm really looking forward to our next Oakwood WI Craft Group session on Thursday, when we'll be spending the afternoon creating beautiful paper flowers from crepe paper.

There is something quite magical about turning sheets of paper into flowers that look so realistic and delicate, and we'll be using special Italian crepe paper which has a wonderful stretch and texture, helping to bring the flowers to life.

This time we'll be focusing on the hibiscus. I chose this flower because learning to make a hibiscus introduces many of the techniques that can then be used for countless other flowers and leaves. Once you've mastered one flower, a whole garden of possibilities opens up!

In the session you'll learn how to:

🌺 Create, colour and shape petals

🌺 Make the attractive stamen and anther centre of the flower

🌺 Construct and shape the five wired petals

🌺 Use hot glue, tacky glue and florist's tape to assemble your flower

🌺 Pick up techniques that can be applied to many other blooms

If you'd like to have a sneak peek before the session, I came across an excellent tutorial from Tamuchly Paper Blooms, complete with a printable template and a wonderfully clear video demonstration. I'll be printing the templates for the session, but if you're curious, you can find the tutorial here:

Forget-Me-Nots and Memories 💙

Having recently watched the John Snow documentary and read about his Alzheimer's diagnosis, I've also been making some little forget-me-not brooches, combining crepe paper with beads and sequins.

Many of you will know that my mother lived with Alzheimer's and Vascular Dementia, so this cause is close to my heart.

Any donations made at the session will be given to the Alzheimer's Society. You'll be very welcome to take away a forget-me-not brooch, or perhaps make one yourself. It feels like a small but meaningful way to remember loved ones and support others affected by dementia.

One of the loveliest things about these WI afternoons is not just the crafting, but the opportunity to sit together, chat, learn something new and enjoy each other's company. Whether you're an experienced crafter or trying paper flowers for the first time, I hope you'll come along and join us.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all on Thursday for an afternoon of flowers, friendship, creativity, and perhaps a cuppa and a biscuit or two!
